DAIDZEIN KUDZU EXTRACT
Kudzu is a climbing vine native to Japan and China that now grows prolifically throughout the southeastern U.S. Kudzu is used in traditional Chinese medicine to help curb alcohol cravings and provide hangover relief. Scientists are further investigating the plants effects on health, particularly for menopausal and postmenopausal women.
Red clover is a wild plant belonging to the legume family. It has also been used medicinally to treat several conditions including whooping cough, respiratory problems, and skin inflammations, such as psoriasis and eczema. Health care practitioners believe that red clover “purified” the blood by acting as a diuretic (helping the body get rid of excess fluid) and expectorant (helping clear lungs of mucous), improving circulation, and helping cleanse the liver.
Modern scientific tests have shown that red clover contains isoflavones, plant-based chemicals that produce estrogen-like effects in the body. Isoflavones have shown potential in the treatment of several conditions associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, cardiovascular health, and osteoporosis.
NORWAY SPRUCE EXTRACT
Plant lignans have been shown to benefit humans in a variety of ways. The plant lignan hydroxymatairesinol (HMR), derived from Norway spruce, is metabolized to “enterolactone” in the gut where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Higher levels of serum enterolactones in men have been associated with decreased prostate cancer risk. Recent research on human prostate tissue indicates that enterolactone restricts the proliferation of human prostate cancer in the laboratory.
Enterolactone such as that derived from Norway spruce acts via numerous mechanisms to benefit aging men’s health. Increasing estrogen levels in aging men are believed to represent a significant culprit in the development of both benign prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. Enterolactone functions via several mechanisms to reduce estrogen levels.
Black Pepper is a spice commonly used in many areas of the world for flavor. Through its active component Piperine, Black Pepper is able to modify supplement and drug metabolism.
A process in the liver called glucuronidation, which attaches a molecule (glucuronide) to drugs to signal for their urinary excretion, is inhibited with piperine. This process prevents excessive levels of drugs and supplements in the body, but sometimes inhibits all uptake and renders some supplements useless. In the scenario of piperine ingestion, excretion of supplements is hindered and certain drugs and supplements can bypass this regulatory stage (as not all are subject to it).
